What Are Dental Crowns?

Crowns are dental prosthetics designed to repair and protect your teeth. They are securely bonded to your natural tooth or placed on top of a dental implant to restore both function and appearance. Crowns are intended to be a permanent solution, giving you a strong, natural-looking tooth that blends seamlessly with your smile.

A crown can cover a tooth that has been damaged by trauma, decay, or wear. It shields the tooth from further harm while improving its appearance if it has been cracked, stained, broken, or chipped. When made of porcelain, crowns can be custom-tinted to match the shade of your surrounding teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable from your natural smile.

Why Might You Need a Crown?

We use crowns to:

  • Shield a weakened tooth from breaking
  • Mount a dental implant
  • Correct a discolored or misshapen tooth
  • Cap a tooth that has had a root canal
  • Replace a large filling
  • Secure a dental bridge

Though crowns are built to last many years when properly cared for, they can occasionally become damaged, loose, or fall off. If this happens, we can easily repair or replace the crown during an office visit.

Types of Porcelain Crowns

We offer two main types of porcelain crowns, each with its own advantages:

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are designed to look like your natural tooth and can be tinted to match your adjacent teeth. This type of crown is very strong, though it may cause slightly more wear on the chewing surfaces of the opposite tooth. In some cases, a thin grey line may become visible at the gum line where the metal base shows through.

All-porcelain crowns provide the most natural-looking results and blend beautifully with your smile. While slightly less strong than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, they still offer excellent durability and cause less wear on opposing teeth. All-porcelain crowns are typically the best choice for front teeth where appearance is most important.

Common questions
How long do dental crowns last?+

Crowns are designed to be a long-lasting solution and can last many years when properly cared for. With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, your crown can serve you well for a decade or more. If a crown becomes damaged or loose, we can repair or replace it during an office visit.

Which type of crown is right for me?+

The best type of crown depends on the location of the tooth and your specific needs. All-porcelain crowns offer the most natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns provide extra strength and are often preferred for back teeth that endure more chewing force. We will discuss your options and help you choose the best solution for your smile.

Will my crown look natural?+

Yes. We custom-tint porcelain and ceramic crowns to match the shade of your surrounding teeth, so your crown will blend seamlessly with your natural smile. Most people will not be able to tell the difference between your crown and your natural teeth.
