What Situations Are Considered a Dental Emergency?

Any situation where you need immediate or prompt attention from a dentist is considered an emergency. Some of the most frequently encountered dental emergencies include:

  • Lost teeth
  • Abscesses
  • Severe toothaches
  • Swollen gums
  • Pain in and around the jaw
  • Chips, cracks, or broken teeth
  • Lost or broken implants, dentures, or bridges
  • Lost or loose fillings, onlays, crowns, or veneers

If you're experiencing any of these issues, please call our office right away at 908-687-7036.

What to Do if a Tooth is Knocked Out

Having a tooth knocked out is one of the most severe dental emergencies. If this happens to you or a family member, time is critical. Follow these steps to improve the chances of saving the tooth:

  1. Handle the tooth carefully – Pick it up by the crown (the white part), never by the root. Touching the root can damage it and make it impossible to save.

  2. Try to reinsert the tooth – Gently place it back into the socket if possible. Hold it in place with light pressure.

  3. Keep the tooth moist – If you can't reinsert it, keep the tooth between your cheek and gums. If that's not possible, place it in a glass of milk.

  4. Get to our office immediately – The sooner you arrive, the better the chance of successfully reattaching the tooth.

How to Avoid Dental Emergencies

While not all emergencies can be prevented, healthy teeth are far less likely to experience problems. Here's how to protect your smile:

  • Visit our office for routine exams – Regular checkups help us catch and address issues before they become emergencies.
  • Brush and floss daily – Good home care keeps your teeth and gums strong.
  • Wear a custom mouth guard – If you play sports or engage in activities where your mouth could be at risk, a properly fitted mouth guard is essential.
  • Avoid using your teeth as tools – Don't use them to open packages or remove lids.
  • Skip the ice and hard candies – Chewing on hard objects can crack or chip your teeth.

If you're experiencing a dental emergency, don't wait. Contact Union Family Dental right away so we can help you feel better fast.
