When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Although teeth are meant to stay in your mouth permanently, decay and damage can make them weak and even infected. In these instances, teeth need to be extracted to preserve your oral health.

Common reasons for extraction include:

  • Severe decay or damage that cannot be repaired with a filling, crown, or other restorative treatment
  • Failed root canal treatment where the tooth root is too damaged to save
  • Overcrowding, often caused by wisdom teeth that don't have enough room to erupt properly
  • Advanced gum disease that has caused the tooth to loosen significantly
  • Impacted teeth that are stuck beneath other teeth or the gum line
  • Broken teeth that cannot be restored

What Happens During the Procedure

The extraction process depends on why the tooth needs to be removed, where it's located, and the overall health of the tooth.

Simple extraction: When the tooth is easily accessible, we'll numb the gum area and gently remove the tooth using specially designed instruments.

Surgical extraction: When a tooth is impacted, stuck beneath other teeth, or broken, a small incision into the gums may be required. Many patients request sedation for this type of extraction. In these cases, the tooth is typically removed in pieces rather than all at once.

Pain Management and Comfort

We use trusted pain management options to ensure that any discomfort is minimal. After the procedure, you may want to use over-the-counter pain relieving medication and ice packs to manage any pain and swelling.

What to Expect During Recovery

The initial recovery period takes about one to two weeks. During this time, new bone and gum tissue will grow into the gap.

Important: Leaving a gap without filling it with an implant or prosthetic can cause your remaining teeth to shift. This can affect your bite and make chewing difficult. We typically recommend replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant and crown after the gum and bone have had time to heal.

How it works
01

Examination and Assessment

We'll evaluate the tooth and surrounding area, take any necessary X-rays, and discuss your treatment options and pain management preferences.

02

Numbing and Preparation

The area around the tooth is numbed with local anesthesia. Sedation can be provided if requested or needed for complex extractions.

03

Gentle Removal

Using specialized instruments, we carefully remove the tooth. Surgical extractions may require a small incision and removal in sections.

04

Aftercare Instructions

We'll provide detailed recovery guidelines and discuss options for replacing the tooth, such as dental implants, to maintain your oral health.
